Embracing the Return of Light: The Sacred Winter Solstice

When Darkness Teaches Us to Remember the Sun

Sunday, December 21, 2025, at 10:03 AM EST marks the Winter Solstice—the shortest day and longest night of the year in the Northern Hemisphere.

But this moment of deepest darkness is not an ending. It's a threshold. A turning point. A sacred pause before the return of light.

For thousands of years, cultures around the world have celebrated the Winter Solstice as far back as the stone ages, with monuments dating back to 3200 B.C. that align with the sunrise on this day. Our ancestors understood something profound: that in the depths of winter, when the world seems dormant and cold, something miraculous is happening.

The sun is being reborn. And so are we.

What Is the Winter Solstice?

The Winter Solstice is the day with the fewest hours of sunlight throughout the year, creating what we experience as the "shortest day." But from this point forward, something shifts.

The sun begins its journey back. After the Winter Solstice, the days begin to grow longer and longer again until we reach the summer solstice—the longest day of the year.

The word 'solstice' comes from the Latin 'solstitium', meaning 'Sun stands still'—because the apparent movement of the Sun's path north or south stops before changing direction.

It's a cosmic pause. A moment when everything holds its breath before exhaling into renewal.

The Spiritual Significance: A Dark Night of the Soul

The time leading up to Winter Solstice is considered a very powerful and holy time of the year—a time of waiting and expectancy for the return of the Sun's light.

In many spiritual traditions, this isn't just about the physical sun. It's about the light within us.

The Winter Solstice represents:

The Death and Rebirth Cycle
Just as nature appears to die in winter only to be reborn in spring, we too experience cycles of endings and new beginnings. The solstice reminds us that what appears dead is often just dormant, gathering strength for transformation.

Turning Inward
The spiral action of winter represents turning inward, as many animals are hibernating and nature is quiet. This time of year is ripe for meditation and intention setting. While summer energy is external and expansive, winter energy is internal and reflective.

Honouring the Darkness
We live in a culture that fears darkness—both literal and metaphorical. But darkness is not the enemy. It is the womb of creation, the place where seeds germinate, where rest restores us, where dreams are born.

As one teaching says: "We turn to the void and befriend the dark, where dreams are born. Travel down deep into the belly of the Mother. The wisdom of Gaia is heard only when we become quiet and still".

The Promise of Return
No matter how dark it gets; the light always returns. This is nature's promise to us—a reminder that hope, renewal, and new beginnings are always possible, even when we can't yet see them.

Sacred Rituals: Ways to Honour the Winter Solstice

The beauty of the Winter Solstice is that there's no single "right" way to celebrate it. The invitation is to find what resonates with your soul and honour this turning point in your own way. Here are some powerful rituals you might explore:

1. Light a Fire or Candles. Fire has always been a big part of winter solstice celebrations. Lighting candles or a fire honours the return of the light and creates a warm atmosphere. The warmth and light symbolise the return of the sun, connecting us to ancient traditions when our ancestors would gather around fires to celebrate survival through the darkest days.

How to practice:

·        Light a candle at sunset on December 21st

·        Spend the evening by candlelight, making even mundane activities special and spiritual

·        If you have access to a fireplace or fire pit, light a fire and gather around it

·        Consider keeping one candle burning through the longest night as a vigil for the returning sun

2. Release and Let Go. The Winter Solstice is a time for reflecting on the past year and letting go. Take small scraps of paper and write down things you would like to let go of, then throw them in a fire, transforming darkness into light.

What to release:

·        Patterns that no longer serve you

·        Relationships or situations that drain your energy

·        Limiting beliefs about yourself

·        Past hurts you're ready to forgive

·        Habits you want to leave behind

As you watch the paper burn, imagine all of it transforming—released back to the universe to be composted into something new.

3. Set Intentions for the Returning Light. The Winter Solstice is known as a meaningful time for intention-setting. We focus on what we would like to bring forth with the return of the light and our hopes and dreams for our highest expression. After releasing what you no longer need, ask yourself:

·        What do I want to create in this new cycle?

·        What qualities do I want to embody?

·        What dreams are ready to be born?

·        How do I want to feel as the days grow longer?

Write these intentions down and keep them somewhere sacred. Revisit them as winter transitions into spring.

4. Create a Solstice Spiral Meditation. The spiral represents turning inward for winter. Walk into a spiral, and with each step go deeper into your breath and your mind. Let your thoughts spin quietly away. Leave a small gift or light a candle in the centre, then sit in the centre and slow your breath in the quiet of the night.

You can create a spiral with: Stones or crystals, String lights, Candles (safely placed), Natural materials like pinecones and evergreen branches. Walk the spiral inward to release and reflect, then walk it outward to carry your intentions forward.

5. Cleanse Your Space and Energy. Clear your energy and the energy of important spaces such as your home or office using smudge or other shamanic or energy healing practices.

Cleansing practices:

·        Burn sage, palo santo, or incense

·        Use cosy scents like cinnamon, pine, nutmeg, cloves and mistletoe to transform your home into a sanctuary of seasonal warmth

·        Declutter and clean your space to remove energy blockers

·        Take a ritual bath with aromatics, candles, and intention

6. Connect with Nature. commemorate the day by going on a walk in nature and taking in the beauty of wintertime.

·        Watch the sunrise or sunset

·        Spend time outdoors noticing the stillness of winter

·        Collect natural items (evergreen branches, pinecones, holly) to bring into your home

·        Stand barefoot on the earth (even briefly!) to ground yourself

7. Journal and Reflect. Journal your thoughts and intentions to release what's no longer serving you. When you give these thoughts to the page, they take up less space in your brain and make room for new ones. Prompts for reflection:

·        What did this past year teach me?

·        What am I grateful for?

·        What challenged me, and how did I grow?

·        What is my soul asking for in this new cycle?

·        If I could plant one seed intention for the coming months, what would it be?

The Deeper Wisdom: What the Solstice Teaches Us

Beyond rituals and traditions, the Winter Solstice offers us profound spiritual teachings:

Darkness Is Not the Enemy. We've been taught to fear darkness—to fill every silence, brighten every shadow, avoid every difficult emotion. But spiritually, the Winter Solstice is a time to honour both the light and the darkness that resides within each of us. Darkness is where:

·        Seeds germinate before they can grow

·        Rest allows for healing

·        Stillness creates space for insight

·        The unknown holds infinite possibility

Everything Is Cyclical. Just as the sun returns after the longest night, our lives move in cycles too. What feels like an ending is often a beginning in disguise. What appears dead may simply be dormant, gathering strength. The solstice reminds us that light and rebirth always follow periods of challenge and introspection. No matter how deep the shadow and darkness may seem, the sun rises again, a lesson to carry in our hearts, a reminder of the ever-present possibility of new beginnings.

We Are Connected to Something Larger. When we honour the solstice, we join our ancestors across thousands of years who also watched the sun's journey, who also felt the cold, who also waited in faith for the return of warmth and light.

We are part of an ancient story. We are woven into the fabric of Earth's rhythms. We are never truly alone.

·        Rest in the darkness before we're ready for the light

The Winter Solstice reminds us that this is natural. This is sacred. This is necessary.
